BLACK MEN IN THEATRE

In response to a lack of Black male submissions to the PIECE OF MINE Festival, the company created a special call out for men to share their narratives on stage.

Black Men in Theatre is a curated collection of pieces from seasoned and emerging performing artists and writers. While most events in February focus on historical contributions by African Americans, critics and audiences are praising Black Men in Theatre for its refreshing approach to present lived experiences. The line-up covers authentic themes of manhood within the framework of honest and engaging storytelling.

First presented at 918 Bathurst Cultural Centre in 2015, the showcase grew the following year as part of Black Fractals at Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) in 2016. The third production was held in February 2018 at Fairview Library Theatre.

“Black Men in Theatre is a glance into the colourful soul of the black male experience.”

– Casey Bradfield, audience member/writer

“It was quite refreshing to see that it was a full house tonight and that the brothers welcomed us into their reality via the stage, very inspiring.”

– Amina Alfred, audience member/artist
