This is a landmark production. With hundreds of theatre shows in the city, it is rare to find a local-Canadian narrative that pays tribute to Toronto’s diversity, namely Jamaican heritage, proudly navigated in The Negroes Are Congregating.
The Negroes are Congregating poses an unapologetic and impolite perspective about the ongoing effects of racism in Canada and around the world. Delivered through a fusion of spoken word, satire, and soulful dialect, audiences are invited to experience raw truths up close and personal – leaving them with an understanding of what it means to be Black, proud, and ready.
Each performance includes an audience discussion.
Across Canada, Natasha is quickly becoming known as an exceptional talent to follow, an emerging playwright who creates complex, daring, honest and highly relevant works.
– Laura Nanni, SummerWorks Artistic and Managing Director
The award-winning playwright, Natasha Adiyana Morris, is racking praise and selling out houses with her first full-length play, The Negroes Are Congregating. Listen to the rawness and realness of Black-Canadians, their truth & perceptions, from experiences with identity and racism in modern Canadian life. A diverse cast of African and Caribbean roots, from Toronto, will thrill you with this vibrant new play.
The two-week engagement will be staged in the mainspace of Theatre Passe Muraille, a 185-seat landmark venue that has showcased acclaimed artists such as Judith Thompson, Keanu Reeves, and Divine Brown. Local and international presenters/curators include; Théâtre de l’Usine (Geneva, Switzerland); Black Theatre Network Conference (Memphis, TN); SummerWorks Performance Festival (Toronto, Ontario), and the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival (selected as “Producer’s Pick”).
